Here Comes The Sun

The Beatles

Composição: George Harrison
Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
And I say
It's all right
Little darling
It's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling
It feels like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
And I say
It's all right
Little darling
The smiles returning to the faces
Little darling
It seems like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
And I say
It's all right
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Little darling
I feel that ice is slowly melting
Little darling
It seems like years since it's been clear
Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
And I say
It's all right
Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
It's all right
It's all right

Origin

The song, one of Harrison's best-known Beatles contributions alongside "Something", originated from a song-writing collaboration between Harrison and close friend Eric Clapton called "Badge" (recorded by Clapton's group Cream), which featured an arpeggiated guitar riff that is similar to the one that forms the bridge of "Here Comes the Sun". The year 1969 was a difficult one for Harrison: he was arrested for marijuana possession, he had his tonsils removed, and he had quit the band temporarily. The song was written while Harrison was away from all of these troubles.
Harrison stated in The Beatles Anthology:
"Here Comes the Sun" was written at the time when Apple was getting like school, where we had to go and be businessmen: 'Sign this' and 'sign that'. Anyway, it seems as if winter in England goes on forever, by the time spring comes you really deserve it. So one day I decided I was going to sag off Apple and I went over to Eric Clapton's house. The relief of not having to go see all those dopey accountants was wonderful, and I walked around the garden with one of Eric's acoustic guitars and wrote "Here Comes The Sun".[1]

Recording

Harrison, McCartney and Starr recorded the rhythm track in 13 takes on 7 July, 1969. John Lennon did not contribute to the song as he was recovering from a car crash.[2] Towards the end of the session Harrison spent an hour re-recording his acoustic guitar part. Harrison capoed his guitar on the 7th fret, resulting the final key of A major. He also used the same technique on his 1965 song "If I Needed Someone," which shares a similar melodic pattern. The following day he taped his lead vocals, and he and McCartney recorded their backing vocals twice to give a fuller sound.
.
A harmonium and handclaps were added on 16 July. Harrison's guitar solo was overdubbed on 6 August, and the orchestral parts were added on 15 August. "Here Comes The Sun" was completed four days later with the addition of Harrison's Moog part.[3]

Voyager Proposal

Astronomer and science popularizer Carl Sagan had wanted the song to be included on the Voyager Golden Record, copies of which were attached to both spacecraft of the Voyager program to provide any entity that recovered them a representative sample of human civilization. Although the Beatles favoured the idea, EMI refused to release the rights and when the probes were launched in 1977 the song was not included.[4]

Cover versions

  • The song was covered by Peter Tosh and released as a hit single; another popular Jamaican version was released in 1971 by singer and producer Rupie Edwards on his Success label. Additionally, American folk singer Richie Havens saw his 1971 version reach #16 in the U.S.
  • The most successful UK cover was by Steve Harley who reached number 10 in 1976. Singer/pianist/songwriter Nina Simone also recorded the song on an album with the same title: Here Comes the Sun (1971). The German bandleader James Last also made a cover version, taking the style of the song sung by Richie Havens as a basis for a version sung on his Beachparty2 album in 1971. In 2002 Linda Eder covered this song as the first track on her Gold album. It had been recorded on 19 November 2001 — just 10 days before Harrison's death. An instrumental cover by Bill Laswell appears on the album OHM Shanti by Asana (2005), and on the album Una Guitarra, Un Sentimiento (2005) by classic Latin guitar master Pedro Guasti. The pop/rock singer Paul Monday (aka Gary Glitter) also recorded the song and issued it as a single in 1969. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have also covered the song.
  • The song was also performed by George Harrison and Paul Simon in a televised appearance on Saturday Night Live, in 1976.[5]
  • There is a live cover by Belle & Sebastian recorded in Belfast in 2001 included on their 2008 album The BBC Sessions.
  • Les Fradkin has an instrumental version on his While My Guitar Only Plays CD with Nokie Edwards of The Ventures on second guitar.
  • Voodoo Glow Skulls recorded a cover of this song for their album Who Is, This Is?.
  • Yo-Yo Ma performs a version with James Taylor on the album Songs of Joy & Peace released in 2008.
  • Acen sampled the song for the Breakbeat Hardcore track "Close Your Eyes," but copyright issues led to its removal from some releases.
  • The Punkles did a Punk cover of this song on their fourth album For Sale.
  • Bob Khaleel recorded a cover of this song for the soundtrack of the 1998 version of The Parent Trap.
  • Sheryl Crow recorded a version of this song for Jerry Seinfeld's Bee Movie played at the end of the movie and over the end credits.
  • Riot's lead guitarist Mark Reale recorded an instrumental version of the song on their 2002 album Through the Storm.
  • Rockapella recorded the song for their 2002 album Smilin'.
  • Sarah Bettens covered this song as a b-side to her single "Stay" from her album Scream.
  • Travis covered "Here Comes The Sun" as a b-side on their single "Flowers In The Window".
  • Nina Simone has also covered it. A remix of the Nina Simone version appears on the album Remixed and Reimagined by François K.
  • Tommy Emmanuel covers the song on the live album Center Stage in a medley that includes "When I'm Sixty-Four", "Day Tripper", and "Lady Madonna".
  • A remix is included in Groove Armada's 2003 Essential Mix.
  • Sandy Farina performed it in the 1978 movie Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and the song also appears on the soundtrack.
  • Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band performed this on the set-list of the 2003 tour with Sheila E., Paul Carrack, John Waite, Colin Hay and Mark Riverra and it's included in the DVD released chronicling the tour.
  • Denny Doherty of The Mamas & the Papas recorded the song as part of a medley with "Two of Us" on his 1971 album Watcha Gonna Do.
  • U2 regularly snippet the song during live performances of their hit Beautiful Day.
  • Bon Jovi also did a cover in 2001.
  • In 1989, Lulu Santos made an unauthorized version of the song (named "Lá vem o Sol") with lyrics almost literally translated to Portuguese. This matter was subject of a lawsuit and since then the original recording of Lulu's version is forbidden to be released again. In 2009, Lulu Santos was invited to record his verson (then with the all proper authrizaton) for the soundtrack of the soap opera Caminho das Índias. However, Lulu declined that invitation and alleged that Harrison would never agree with using that music on the soundtrack of such a show. Caminho das Índias ranks within the top of the most watched shows in the Brazilian television in 2009 and its main subject is based on a folkloric view of the Indian cuture.
  • In Massive Attack's 1991 album Blue Lines, the song "Daydreaming" features lyrics taken from the song.
  • Mikal Blue and Colbie Caillat recorded a cover version for the 2009 comedy-drama Imagine That.
  • Paul Simon, David Crosby and Graham Nash performed the song in a tribute to George Harrison during the 25th Anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Concert in October, 2009.
