Radetzky March

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

.

Radetzky March, Op. 228 is a march composed by Johann Strauss Sr. in 1848. It was dedicated to the Austrian Field Marshal Joseph Radetzky von Radetz, and became quite a popular march among soldiers.
.
When it was first played, in front of Austrian officers in attendance, they promptly clapped and stomped their feet when they heard the chorus. This tradition is carried over today when the march is played in classical music venues in Vienna, among members of the audience who are familiar with the tradition. It is almost always played as the last piece of music at the Neujahrskonzert, the Vienna New Year Concert.
.
Despite its military nature, its tone is rather festive than martial, in accordance with its dedicatee's exuberant personality and popularity in the ballroom as well as the battlefield. It is usually played in under three minutes.
.
Radetzky March consists of three main parts:
  • The introduction: The whole orchestra plays here and the brass section plays the melody.
  • The first figure: This is played by the string section.
  • At figure two, the whole orchestra plays until figure three when it repeats back to the D.S. (first figure.)
  • The trio: This is played by the brass section and the trumpet plays three triplets in the last bars of the trio.
  • Figure five: The whole orchestra plays here.
  • Figure six: The whole orchestra plays here and then repeats back to figure 5.
  • The orchestra plays on the last bar.
  • They go back to the D.C. (beginning).
  • They play until figure three; and the piece finishes with the Fine ("end") bar -- i.e., the direction is Da capo al fine (repeat from beginning up to the word fine).
The Swedish department store chain Åhléns traditionally played the Radetzky March on a loop from about ten minutes before closing time to remind customers to head for the tills. This has resulted in an almost Pavlovian reaction amongst a certain generation of Swedes to instinctively look around for an exit when they hear that piece of music.

Jesus bleibet meine Freude,
Meines Herzens Trost und Saft,
Jesus wehret allem Leide,
Er ist meines Lebens Kraft,
Meiner Augen Lust und Sonne,
Meiner Seele Schatz und Wonne;
Darum lass ich Jesum nicht

Háry János

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

.

Háry János is a "Hungarian folk opera" (that is, a spoken play with songs, in the manner of a Singspiel) in four acts by Zoltán Kodály to a Hungarian libretto by Béla Paulini and Zsolt Harsányi, based on the comic epic The Veteran (Az obsitos) by János Garay. First performance: Royal Hungarian Opera House, Budapest, 1926.

.

The story is of a veteran hussar in the Austrian army in the first half of the 19th century who sits in the village inn regaling his listeners with fantastic tales of heroism: his supposed exploits include winning the heart of the Empress Marie Louise, the wife of Napoleon, and then single-handedly defeating Napoleon and his armies. Nevertheless, he finally renounces all riches in order to go back to his village with his sweetheart.

.

From the music of the opera, Kodály extracted the orchestral Háry János Suite, one of the most popular pieces in the classical repertoire. This notably includes the cimbalom, a traditional Hungarian variant of the hammer dulcimer.

.

Both the suite and the opera begin with a 'musical sneeze', best explained in Kodály's own words: "According to Hungarian superstition, if a statement is followed by a sneeze of one of the hearers, it is regarded as confirmation of its truth. The Suite begins with a sneeze of this kind! One of Háry's group of faithful listeners … sneezes at the wildest assertions of the old tale-spinner." [1]

.

According to Kodály, Háry János is "the personification of the Hungarian story-telling imagination. He does not tell lies; he imagines stories; he is a poet. What he tells us may never have happened, but he has experienced it in spirit, so it is more real than reality." [2]

.

The movements of the Háry János Suite are as follows:

  1. Prelude; the Fairy Tale Begins
  2. Viennese Musical Clock
  3. Song
  4. The Battle and Defeat of Napoleon
  5. Intermezzo
  6. Entrance of the Emperor and His Court.
.

People may assume that the title Háry János refers to a man named Harry. In Hungarian, names are always presented in the order 'surname', 'first name' (as in Bartók Béla and Liszt Ferenc). Therefore, the title refers to a man called János (a common first name in Hungary, equivalent to the English John), whose surname is Háry. The name was never 'anglicized' (i.e. with the names put in the more usual order) outside Hungary.
