After years of wooing director John Huston via good reviews, film critic James Agee was given a chance to write the screenplay for a Huston picture. Adapted from a novel by C.S. Forester, The African Queen stars Humphrey Bogart in his Oscar-winning portrayal of Charlie Allnut, the slovenly, gin-swilling captain of a tramp steamer called the African Queen, which ships supplies to small East African villages during World War I. Katharine Hepburn plays Rose Sayer, the maiden-lady sister of a prim British missionary (Robert Morley). When invading Germans kill the missionary and level the village, Allnut offers to take Rose back to civilization. She can't tolerate his drinking or bad manners; he isn't crazy about her imperious, judgmental attitude. However it does not take long before their passionate dislike turns to love. Together the disparate duo work to ensure their survival on the treacherous waters and devise an ingenious way to destroy a German gunboat. The African Queen may well be the perfect adventure film, its roller-coaster storyline complemented by the chemistry between its stars. The profound difficulties inherent in filming on location in Africa have been superbly documented by several books, including one written by Katharine Hepburn. Screenwriter Peter Viertel (who worked, on an uncredited basis, on the script of this film - assisting with some of the dialogue) incorporated some of the African Queen anecdotes in his roman a clef about a Huston-like director/adventurer, White Hunter, Black Heart.

Much of Antigone's humanity comes thru in this scene, though more by Papas' acting than the words. Antigone clearly does want to live, and laments her impending death. Missing from this filmed except are the famous (or infamous, around line 1000) comments where she provides rather unconvincing reasons for her actions, and furthur confesses that she would not do all this over the body of a husband or son--repudiating her earlier stance. Some scholars have argued that this passage isn't authentic, but their reasons are rather subjective, and no less an authority than Aristotle quoted them and gave no hint that they may be spurious.

In any case, her actions and words are those of a young woman, filled the certainty and righteousness of youth (Oscar Wilde "I am not young enough to know everything") who, moreover, has not experienced a husband or a child. Antigone is closer to her dead family than anyone living anyway. She is in a rather disraught state now, but like any fine Greek, has to find reasons. But her "reasons" were always more emotional, or to be more exact, pre-rational, anyway. In her cross-examination by Creon (lines 550-570 or so), he zeros in quite effectively on her "reasonings" and she has to retreat into dogma.

Remember that at no time does Tiresias say her stance is correct, and the proper burial of her brother would have taken place without her intervention.

Bon Jovi - A Hard Day's Night (Tradução) Lyrics

Elas vão me fazer sentir melhor
Você sabe q me sinto bem
Elas vão me fazer sentir melhor
Você sabe q me sinto bem

It's been a hard day's night, and I been working like a dog
It's been a hard day's night, I
should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright
You know I work all day to get you money to buy you things
And it's worth it just to hear you
say you're going to give me
everything
So why on earth should I moan, 'cause when I get you alone
You know I feel ok
When I'm home everything seems to be right
When I'm home feeling you holding me tight, tight
Yeah...
It's been a hard days night, and
I've been working like a dog
It's been a hard days night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you I find the things that you do
will make me feel alright
You know I feel alright
You know I feel alright

.

.

.

Tomorrow Belongs to Me" was written by John Kander and Fred Ebb as a pastiche of the rousing German patriotic songs of the period (Die Wacht am Rhein[1] and the Horst Wessel Lied[2], for instance). Sung by a stereotypical Hitler Youth, it often has been mistaken for genuine. This has led to the songwriters (both Jewish, incidentally) being accused of anti-Semitism.

.Speculation continues about the actual singer of "Tomorrow Belongs to Me". Apparently, Bob Fosse's biography states that the song was recorded for the film by Broadway singer/actor, Mark Lambert. Lambert is said to have refused to dye his hair blond for filming so - in one of the film's most powerful scenes - a young German extra stood in for him and mimed the song on camera.

In one case, Kander and Ebb did their job a little too well - the number 'Tomorrow Belongs to Me', which occurs twice during the first act, and acts as an anthem for the Nazi characters is chilling in its theatrical context. However, quite contrary to what the composer and lyricist would have intended, the song was later adopted by a neo-Nazi group, Skrewdriver, principally due to the final verse:

"Oh, Fatherland, Fatherland, show us the time your children have waited to see
The morning will come when the world is mine
Tomorrow belongs to me!"

Originally sung in English, "Tomorrow Belongs To Me" was dubbed in German for the French version of the film(3).

"As Time Goes By"

music and words by ~ Herman Hupfeld

.

.
This day and age we're living in
Gives cause for apprehension
With speed and new invention
And things like fourth dimension.
.
Yet we get a trifle weary
With Mr. Einstein's theory.
So we must get down to earth at times
Relax relieve the tension
.
And no matter what the progress
Or what may yet be proved
The simple facts of life are such
They cannot be removed.]
.
You must remember this
A kiss is just a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh.
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by.
.
And when two lovers woo
They still say, "I love you."
On that you can rely
No matter what the future brings
As time goes by.
.
Moonlight and love songs
Never out of date.
Hearts full of passion
Jealousy and hate.
Woman needs man
And man must have his mate
That no one can deny.
.
It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die.
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by.
.

Oh yes, the world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by.
.
.
