O Sole Mio

O Sole Mio (O Meu Sol, em português) é uma das mais famosas canções folclóricas italianas. Foi composta no no ano de 1898, sendo reconhecida oficialmente em 1901.

Interpretações

Gravada pela primeira vez por Giuseppe Anselmi em 1907, já foi interpretada pelos mais diversos cantores, desde a clássica versão de Luciano Pavarotti até uma versão punk da bandaMe First And The Gimme Gimmes.
. 
Uma das mais famosas versões feita para essa música é It's Now Or Never de Elvis Presley, gravada em 1960. Ela possui a mesma melodia de "O Sole Mio", porém, a letra é em inglês, tendo sido composta por Aaron Schroeder e Wally Gold.

Entretanto, a primeira versão em língua inglesa ocorreu em 1949, gravada por Tony Martin sob o nome de "There's no Tomorrow".

A letra é de Giovanni Capurro e a melodia foi feita por Eduardo di Capua, posteriormente foi descoberto que Alfredo Mazzucchi também participiou da composição.

Funiculì funiculà

"Funiculì, Funiculà" é o nome de uma canção famosa escrita pelo jornalista, poeta e cantautor italiano Giuseppe 'Peppino' Turco e musicada por Luigi Denza em 1880. Ela foi composta para celebrar a abertura do primeiro bonde ou funicular (em italiano: funicolare) do Monte Vesúvio, em 1879. Foi cantada pela primeira vez em Castellammare di Stabia no Hotel Quisisana no dia 6 de junho de 1880 e se tornou um grande sucesso. No mesmo ano, foi apresentada por Turco e Denza no Festival de Piedigrotta[1][2].

Plágio involuntário

Seis anos após Funiculì, Funiculà ter sido criada, o compositor alemão Richard Strauss escutou essa música quando viajava pela Itália. Imaginando tratar-se de uma canção folclórica, ele incorporou-a em sua sinfonia Aus Italien. Denza abriu um processo contra ele e ganhou, forçando Strauss a pagar-lhe royalties todas as vezes em que Aus Italien fosse executada em público.[3]

"Musica proibita"(Gastaldon). Recorded June 20, 1952, for The Mario Lanza Show, with studio orchestra conducted by Constantine Callinicos.

Here is the Youtube debut of Lanza's much sought after Coca-Cola Show "Musica proibita"! His only other recording was on the 1959 RCA Caruso Favorites album- not a favorite of mine. Although some are rather fond of it, to my ears the latter release finds him thick and sluggish of voice, the singing somewhat labored.

This early rendition, on the other hand, offers prime Lanza and allows us to savor the tenor's beautiful mezza voce (also much in evidence in his "Non ti scordar di me" of the same year, which I've posted as well).

Stanislao Gastaldon
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stanislao Gastaldon (b. Torino, Italy, April  8, 1861 – d. Florence, Italy, March  6, 1939). Italian composer primarily of light music. Today, however, he  is remembered almost exclusively for the operatic aria known popularly  as Musica proibita, still one of the most popular pieces of music  in Italy. It has been performed and recorded countless times and,  indeed, most listeners are not even aware that it is from Gastaldon’s  opera Mala Pasqua!, a work from 1890 based on Giovanni Verga’s short story Cavalleria rusticana.  That work also provided the raw material for Mascagni’s opera, Cavalleria rusticana. Both Gastaldon’s  and Mascagni’s operas were composed to be entered in the same music  competition sponsored by the publishing house, Sonzogno, in 1890, a  contest eventually won by Mascagni’s work.

The aria/song Musica proibita, besides being popular in Italy  was the basis for the song "O Promise Me", in the US American musical, Robin  Hood, from the 1890s. Gastaldon wrote across a wide variety of  music and popular novels and plays. His eclecticism included setting to  music in the 1880s some poems by his contemporary Lorenzo Stecchetti (pseudonym of  Olindo Guerrini) and, in 1906, one of Dante’s sonnets, Tanto gentile e tanto onesta pare,  sung by a tenor in the role of Dante, surrounded by scenery depicting Florence  of the 14th century.
