Here is the Youtube debut of Lanza's much sought after Coca-Cola Show "Musica proibita"! His only other recording was on the 1959 RCA Caruso Favorites album- not a favorite of mine. Although some are rather fond of it, to my ears the latter release finds him thick and sluggish of voice, the singing somewhat labored.
This early rendition, on the other hand, offers prime Lanza and allows us to savor the tenor's beautiful mezza voce (also much in evidence in his "Non ti scordar di me" of the same year, which I've posted as well).

Stanislao Gastaldon

Stanislao Gastaldon (b. Torino, Italy, April 8, 1861 – d. Florence, Italy, March 6, 1939). Italian composer primarily of light music. Today, however, he is remembered almost exclusively for the operatic aria known popularly as Musica proibita, still one of the most popular pieces of music in Italy. It has been performed and recorded countless times and, indeed, most listeners are not even aware that it is from Gastaldon’s opera Mala Pasqua!, a work from 1890 based on Giovanni Verga’s short story Cavalleria rusticana. That work also provided the raw material for Mascagni’s opera, Cavalleria rusticana. Both Gastaldon’s and Mascagni’s operas were composed to be entered in the same music competition sponsored by the publishing house, Sonzogno, in 1890, a contest eventually won by Mascagni’s work.

The aria/song Musica proibita, besides being popular in Italy was the basis for the song "O Promise Me", in the US American musical, Robin Hood, from the 1890s. Gastaldon wrote across a wide variety of music and popular novels and plays. His eclecticism included setting to music in the 1880s some poems by his contemporary Lorenzo Stecchetti (pseudonym of Olindo Guerrini) and, in 1906, one of Dante’s sonnets, Tanto gentile e tanto onesta pare, sung by a tenor in the role of Dante, surrounded by scenery depicting Florence of the 14th century.

Martino Stanislao Luigi Gastaldon (Torino, 8 aprile 1861 – Firenze, 6 marzo 1939) è stato un compositore italiano.

Si è laureato in Lettere presso l'Università di Firenze, compiendo poi gli studi musicali a Torino, con Meliani e con A.Creonti. Trasferitosi a Firenze, collaborò in qualità di critico musicale al "Nuovo Giornale".

Attualmente è ricordato quasi esclusivamente per l'aria d'Opera conosciuta popolarmente come Musica proibita, che è tuttora uno dei brani musicali italiani più popolari. Quest'aria è stata eseguita ed incisa innumerevoli volte, eppure la maggior parte degli ascoltatori non sa che essa è tratta dall'opera di Gastaldon Mala Pasqua, un lavoro del 1890 ispirato dalla novella Cavalleria rusticana di Giovanni Verga. Tale composizione fu anche di substrato per l'opera Cavalleria rusticana di Pietro Mascagni. Entrambi i musicisti composero la propria opera sullo stesso soggetto, per partecipare ad una competizione della casa editrice Sonzogno, che fu vinta da Mascagni.

L'attività di Gastaldon ha spaziato in svariati generi musicali. Il suo eclettismo lo spinse nel 1880 a musicare alcune poesie del suo contemporaneo Lorenzo Stecchetti e nel 1906 a scrivere la musica per il sonetto Tanto gentile e tanto onesta pare di Dante Alighieri, cantata da un tenore nel ruolo di Dante, circondato da una scenografia che rappresentava la Firenze del XIV secolo. Scrisse in tutto circa trecento melodie per canto e pianoforte, alcune composizioni per banda, e alcune opere liriche, oltre la già citata Mala Pasqua (rappresentata al Teatro Costanzi di Roma nel 1890), Fatma (non rappresentata), Il Pater dramma lirico in 1 atto (Teatro Manzoni di Milano 1894), Stellina (Firenze 1905), Il sonetto di Dante (Genova 1909) e Il reuccio di Caprilana (Torino 1914).
Curiosità
Malgrado il testo sia "al femminile", l'aria Musica proibita è stata spesso cantata da cantanti uomini, tra i quali: Tito Gobbi, Giuseppe Di Stefano, Beniamino Gigli e moltissimi altri.

L'aria Musica proibita, fu anche la base per la canzone Oh, promise me, contenuta nell'operetta statunitense Robin Hood [1], musicata da Reginald De Koven nel 1890, canzone tuttora popolare negli Stati Uniti in occasione dei matrimoni.
