El pueblo unido, jamás será vencido,
el pueblo unido jamás será vencido...

De pie, cantar
que vamos a triunfar.
Avanzan ya
banderas de unidad.
Y tú vendrás
marchando junto a mí
y así verás
tu canto y tu bandera florecer.
La luz
de un rojo amanecer
anuncia ya
la vida que vendrá.

De pie, luchar
el pueblo va a triunfar.
Será mejor
la vida que vendrá
a conquistar
nuestra felicidad
y en un clamor
mil voces de combate se alzarán,
dirán
canción de libertad,
con decisión
la patria vencerá.

Y ahora el pueblo
que se alza en la lucha
con voz de gigante
gritando: ¡adelante!

El pueblo unido, jamás será vencido,
el pueblo unido jamás será vencido...

La patria está
forjando la unidad.
De norte a sur
se movilizará
desde el salar
ardiente y mineral
al bosque austral
unidos en la lucha y el trabajo
irán,
la patria cubrirán.
Su paso ya
anuncia el porvenir.

De pie, cantar
el pueblo va a triunfar.
Millones ya,
imponen la verdad,
de acero son
ardiente batallón,
sus manos van
llevando la justicia y la razón.
Mujer,
con fuego y con valor,
ya estás aquí
junto al trabajador.

Y ahora el pueblo
que se alza en la lucha
con voz de gigante
gritando: ¡adelante!

El pueblo unido, jamás será vencido,
el pueblo unido jamás será vencido...

The people united will never be defeated,
The people united will never be defeated...

Arise, sing
We are going to win.
Flags of unity
are now advancing.
And you will come
marching together with me,
and so you'll see
your song and your flag blossom.
The light
of a red dawn
already announces
the life to come.

Arise, fight
the people are going to win.
The life to come
will be better.
To conquer
our happiness.
and a clamor
of a thousand fighting voices will rise,
speaking
a song of freedom.
With determination
the fatherland will win.

And now the people,
who are rising in struggle
with a giant voice
crying out: Forward!

The people united will never be defeated,
The people united will never be defeated...

The fatherland is
forging unity,
from north to south
they're mobilizing.
From the salt mines
burning and mineral
to the southern forests.
united in struggle and labor
they go
covering the fatherland.
Their steps already
Announce the future.

Arise, sing
the people are going to win
millions now
are imposing the truth
Their steel battalions
are on fire,
taking in their hands
justice and reason.
Woman
with fire and courage
is already here
Along side the worker.

Tribute to Chilean Political Singer and activist Victor Jara, murdered by dictator Pinochets troops on 15th September 1973. This followed the military coup on 9/11 1973 which overthrew the democratically elected government led by Salvator Allende. Allende was found dead in La Moneda (Presedential Palace) beside an AK47 given to him by Fidel Castro, allegedly after commiting suicide. Victor Jara, after singing a political song to other prisoners in the National Stadium, has his fingers and ribs smashed by Pinochets troops. Sung by Christy Moore.

BBC News Report on Victor Jara

This is not one of my own songs but one of the most powerful protest songs ever written and probably not as well
known as it deserves. It began as a poem by one of the top British poets - Adrian Mitchell and Arlo Guthrie was inspired to set the poem to music to great effect in my opinion. I first heard the song ion a Live BBC Radio one concert by Peter Seeger who performed the song on Banjo. Later that month I heard it sung in a Coventry folk club and knew I had to learn it. On my move to study at Teesside Poly in 1980, the Chilean society had a stall in the Student's Union and I bought a book of Victor Jara's songs and in the back were the chords to this song. The version here was performed by myself on acoustic guitar and vocals and Steve Gillgallon on bass guitar in 1983. Strangly, shortly after recording this version on a double cassette player, I performed the song solo at a Middlebrough Folk club along with my own song Political Asylum (on this site - see index). It went down a storm - more so than I expected. Talking at the bar - I discovered that it was the 10th aniversary of Victor Jara's death and the TV had shown a documentary of it the night before - being a poor student - I didn't have a TV then so didn't know about it. This strange synchronicity got me invited to perform the two songs at a special concert for Victor Jara in Middlesbrough with Teesside's folk family - The Wilsons. The hall was packed. I performed it just on my own with a acoustic guitar but here's an electric version with Steve Gillgallon.

VICTOR JARA
words by Adrian Mitchell, music by Arlo Guthrie

.

Victor Jara of Chile
Lived like a shooting star
He fought for the people of Chile
With his songs and his guitar
His hands were gentle, his hands were strong

.

Victor Jara was a peasant
He worked from a few years old
He sat upon his father's plow
And watched the earth unfold
His hands were gentle, his hands were strong

.

Now when the neighbors had a wedding
Or one of their children died
His mother sang all night for them
With Victor by her side
His hands were gentle, his hands were strong

.

He grew up to be a fighter
Against the people's wrongs
He listened to their grief and joy
And turned them into songs
His hands were gentle, his hands were strong

.

He sang about the copper miners
And those who worked the land
He sang about the factory workers
And they knew he was their man
His hands were gentle, his hands were strong
.
.
Here's another version not buy me this time but Christy Moore
.

.
He campaigned for Allende
Working night and day
He sang "Take hold of your brothers hand
You know the future begins today"
His hands were gentle, his hands were strong

.

Then the generals seized Chile
They arrested Victor then
They caged him in a stadium
With five-thousand frightened men
His hands were gentle, his hands were strong

.

Victor stood in the stadium
His voice was brave and strong
And he sang for his fellow prisoners
Till the guards cut short his song
His hands were gentle, his hands were strong

.

They broke the bones in both his hands
They beat him on the head
They tore him with electric shocks
And then they shot him dead
His hands were gentle, his hands were strong

.

Now the Generals they rule Chile
and the British have their thanks
For they rule with Hawker Hunters
And they rule with Chieftain tanks
His hands were gentle, his hands were strong

Repeat first verse

.
